Gotogate

The company Gotogate is owned by the Swedish agency Etraveli Group AB, which is one of the five largest online travel agencies in Europe, providing services to the airline industry. Etraveli is very experienced in the airline industry. It has been in business since 1989 and it is one of the first e-commerce travel agencies in Scandinavia. It is now operating in 25 countries worldwide.

The company Gotogate is based in Sweden as wel and it offers online comparison of airline tickets, hotels and car rentals.

Gotogate has 14 million customers a year and compares airline tickets of 650 airlines.

The flight search engine on Gotogate is very predictive. You always need to enter your departure, arrival location and exact travel dates on this website. The comparator will first show the so-called Recommended Trips and from this option you can quickly click on Cheapest Trips at the top of the screen. The comparator will then instantly sort the results from cheapest to most expensive.

You can also filter the results, but compared to other companies (e.g. KAYAK or Momondo) the filter options are quite limited. Gotogate offers the option to view only direct flights, but this option often deprives the user of the cheapest tickets.

Gotogate provides a so-called price information in the list of options, where you can see whether the price of the ticket is without checked baggage or if it includes baggage.

After clicking on Book Now, the user chooses which of the three levels they want to upgrade their ticket to. The highest package includes free booking and a refund in case of cancellation due to illness or accident.

In the next step, the user fills in the passenger details, followed by seat selection, payment and finally confirmation. Payment can be made by Visa, Mastercard or Eurocard.

During the booking process, Gotogate informs its customers about the health and safety measures in all countries where the passenger will visit the airport, which is a nice bonus.

Gotogate doesn't have a very good reputation on the internet. People complain mainly about problems with cancellations or bookings, and the company allegedly does not refund money. Other complaints go to the inability to contact Gotogate by phone, the company does not answer phone calls and also often handles email communication with automated replies. Reviews can also be read on the Trustpilot website, where the company received 1.8 stars out of 5.

There is even an English Facebook page called "Gotogate is a SCAM" that has nearly 2,000 followers. People can share their bad experiences with the company there. The site claims that Gotogate adds hidden fees to ticket prices and is bad at communication.

The site also has a mobile app Gotogate, which is available for both Android and Apple, but it has a rating of just 1.3 stars out  of 5. Reviewers complain that you can't pay by card through the app, can't rely on it for departure times and so on.

Gotogate offers its customers, for example, the following discounts:

• first time purchase with a discount of 60%
• 20% discount in selected section on Gotogate
• special offers
• subscription to the newsletter earns a voucher worth EUR 10 (GBP 9 or USD 12) on orders over EUR 150 (GBP 129 or USD 176)

Discount Coupons are offered by Gotogate. They are limited in validity and can often only be used on certain products (such as hotels or car hire).

Changing tickets with Gotogate includes 2 administration fees (one from the airline and one from Gotogate). The change fee varies according to the rules of the particular airline. In addition, you must pay the difference between ticket prices if the new ticket is more expensive.

Gotogate offers the option to purchase a Flexible Ticket. It has the advantage of waiving all administration fees, but you still have to pay the difference in ticket prices. If the passenger does not purchase a Flexible Ticket when booking, this package will automatically be added to the Gotogate fee, when the ticket is changed.

All ticket changes on Gotogate are handled by phone.

Cancellation

Gotogate cancels tickets according to the rules of the airlines. Please note that some airlines allow cancellation for a fee and others do not allow cancellation at all.

Cancellation directly with Gotogate is only possible at least 7 days before departure. If a customer wishes to cancel their flight just a few days before departure, they must contact the airline directly. Gotogate also informs its customers that the flight is not cancelled until the customer receives confirmation directly from Gotogate.

Refunds

The refund is processed according to the terms and conditions of the airline and the money will be credited to the account used to pay for the booking. Refunds are paid by the service provider (the airline). Gotogate advises its customers that air fares contain different components and not all of them may be refundable, which means that the amount refunded may not be the exact amount paid by the customer at the time of booking.

Service fees charged by Gotogate cannot be refunded. Gotogate as an intermediary only processes the refund received from the relevant airline.
