The close cooperation between KLM and Air France is evidenced by their joint Flying Blue loyalty programme. You earn points for each flight, which can then be redeemed for a range of benefits such as priority boarding or free upgrades. You enter the program as an Explorer, and as your points increase, you'll move up to Silver and later Gold status. The highest possible status is Platinum. Anyone can join the Flying Blue programme for free.

The airline Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij probably doesn't ring a bell, but you'll already know the abbreviation KLM. It's the Dutch national airline based at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam. KLM is part of the SkyTeam alliance. It is a sister company of Air France, so on long-haul flights you can often find one part of the journey flying with KLM, the other with Air France.
The KLM fleet consists mainly of Boeing 737-800 and Boeing 737-700 aircraft. Interestingly, KLM names its aircraft after UNESCO-listed monuments.

The cheapest tickets from KLM are usually purchased 3 months before departure. For shorter routes, you can find good prices even 1 to 2 months in advance.

<h3>Online check-in</h3>
At least 30 hours before departure, you can check in online for free, either via the mobile app (available for <a rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.afklm.mobile.android.gomobile.klm" target="_blank">Android</a> and <a rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://apps.apple.com/app/apple-store/id391732065?" target="_blank">iOS</a>), or a regular web browser. During check-in, you choose your own seats. You can then print your boarding pass at home, at the self-service kiosk at the airport or by asking the airport counter staff. If you have the boarding pass on your smartphone, you don't need to print anything. You just scan the code at the airport.
<h3>Airport check-in</h3>
You can also check in for free at the airport by using self check-in kiosks 2 hours before departure. The other option is the classic counter. On flights within Europe it is open between 2 hours and 40 minutes before departure. For intercontinental flights, this time extends to 3 hours and 60 minutes.

On all routes, you get a carry-on bag + one personal item included. On selected long-haul flights, you will also receive a checked baggage allowance.
<h3>Carry-on baggage</h3>
You are always allowed to take on board a carry-on bag with a maximum size of 55 × 35 × 25 cm (21.7 x 13.8 x 9.8 inches) with a maximum weight of 12 kg (26.5 lb). In addition, you may have a personal item (handbag, camera bag, etc.) with a maximum size of 40 × 30 × 15 cm (15.7 x 11.8 x 5.9 inches).
<h3>Checked baggage</h3>
Checked baggage can weigh up to 23 kg (50.7 lb) and have a maximum total size of 158 cm (62.2 inches). This is free of charge only on selected long-haul routes. In other cases, checked baggage must be purchased. It is worth doing this online before departure.
If you are travelling with special baggage, such as sports equipment or a musical instrument, you should inform the airline as soon as possible. You can easily do this in the My Trip section after logging into your profile.
Flying with children? If you booked your child their own seat, they are allowed to take the same luggage on board free of charge as adults. If you are travelling with a child under the age of 2, you are allowed to take a baby bag, pushchair and child seat on board the aircraft free of charge.

Children up to 1 year old can sit on your lap. You are allowed to take a baby bag, a smaller stroller and a baby seat for free. Older children must have their own seat. However, if you are travelling as a family on one booking, KLM will try to make sure you sit next to each other on the plane. Children over the age of 2 will then receive a special children's menu on long-haul flights at no extra charge. They can enjoy not only food, but also entertainment. The flight attendants will give them a Blue play set with games, pencils and other tools.
<h3>Child flying without parents</h3>
You have to fill in a special form for your child to be able to fly alone. In addition, for children under 14 years of age, you will need to book the so-called Unaccompanied Minor service. An airline employee will join your child at the airport to ensure a smooth boarding experience.
<h3>Pregnant women and flying</h3>
Are you pregnant? KLM does not recommend flying from the 36th week of pregnancy. If you have any complications, you must get your doctor's approval. Consultation is also recommended if you are expecting more than one child.

With KLM you will always get food and drink on board. Its richness varies depending on how long the route ahead of you is. On short flights within Europe, you can look forward to small snacks and a selection of drinks (juice, beer, coffee, tea and more). On longer flights, you'll be served a full meal. On intercontinental flights, you will get a large meal in most cases and you can ask for a drink any time. A special a la carte menu can be pre-ordered for a fee.

Wi-Fi will be available on an increasing number of aircraft. As soon as you see the Wi-Fi logo sticker at boarding, you'll know there will be a possibility of internet connection. KLM provides free access to Messenger, WhatsApp and more.
On most long-haul flights, you can use the KLM onboard entertainment portal. In it, you'll find dozens of movies, songs and games. You can also read the Holland Herald magazine.

To be able to change the date or location of your tickets, you must purchase them in Flex Economy Class or add the additional option called Flexibility, which allows 3 free changes, to Light Economy and Standard Economy classes. This option can only be added to flights within Europe departing in 10 days or more. Simply make the change by logging in to My Trip.

You can, of course, cancel tickets, but the specific conditions vary depending on the class purchased. In general, the amount is refundable only for Flex Economy. If you do not show up for check-in, nothing happens. However, your ticket will be forfeited without any refund, even on the Flex fare.

Was your flight delayed by more than 3 hours? Then you can request compensation. On the KLM website you simply fill in the application form and try to attach documents proving the delay. If your flight originated or terminated in the EU and the delay was caused by the airline and not, for example, the weather, you have a good chance that your claim will be successful. In this case, you will receive a voucher or money from KLM.
